You all remember Auburn’s Chris Davis, right? No? Let me refresh your memory:

Sorry, Bama fans. For those that didn’t have a dog in the fight, it was one of those highlight reel plays worth watching over and over because of just how unbelievable it was.

The helmet worn by Chris Davis during that improbable 109 field goal return for a touchdown during the 2013 Iron Bowl is up for sale, according to ESPN.com

This is also the helmet that Davis wore for much of the 2013 season, including the SEC Championship game win over Missouri, and in the loss to Florida State in the National Championship game. The helmet is inscribed with “Game Used Iron Bowl 2013”, and is signed by Davis.

Goldin’s Auctions is the firm putting this item up for bidding. The opening bid is $5,000.00 and bidding opens on October 6th. It will run through the remainder of the month.

Pittsburgh Steelers defensive end James Harrison’s helmet that he was wearing during his record-breaking 100 yard interception return in Super Bowl XLIII sold at auction for $53,775 in 2012. That has been the benchmark for game-worn helmet auctions.

Will Davis’s helmet rake in that kind of cash? With the Iron Bowl, it is entirely possible. This rivalry took root long before the NFL was even born, and this is one of the iconic plays of the 117 year old feud. Add to that the level of fervor that each fan base has, and you have a recipe for a lot of money changing hands. Who knows, maybe an Alabama fan will buy it and have it destroyed a la the “Bartman Ball”. You know, just to take the rivalry to the next level.
