This has been a great start to 2014 for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Fans are ecstatic that they are running the ball like they did during their heyday in the mid 1990’s, and so far, it is working.

In fact, the Cornhuskers are the last unbeaten team in their respective conference since 2001. That year they went to the National Championship Game and Eric Crouch won the Heisman Trophy.

Of course, Faux Pelini was all over this one:

Most of those years were spent in a Big 12 dominated by Oklahoma and Texas. And this streak includes the Bill Callahan era which set Nebraska football back at least five years. He might still be the most hated non-politician in Nebraska, and he was run out of the state almost seven years ago.

Their journey into the Big Ten has not gone much better. The team itself has largely been better, but they still find themselves playing second fiddle to the likes of Wisconsin and Ohio State.

While Nebraska’s first five opponents were fairly weak (Florida Atlantic, McNeese State, Fresno State, Miami(FL), and Illinois), the fact remains that they are still unbeaten. That said, Wisconsin’s loss is to LSU at Jerry World, which was practically a road game, and Michigan State lost at Oregon.

This definitely has the potential to be a magical year for Nebraska. However, their three toughest games (Michigan State, Wisconsin, and Iowa) are all on the road.
