Shanghai Masters 2014: Daily Preview, 10/9

Friday is time for the Quarter-Finals of the Shanghai Masters In China, with some surprise names taking up spaces in the last 8 of the draw. Seeds have tumbled at an alarming rate, with only 3 left standing to battle their way into the semis.

STADIUM
[6] Tomas Berdych (CZE) v Gilles Simon (FRA)

Thomas Berdych is in absolutely phenomenal form. Don’t let his humiliating loss to Djokovic last week detract from the rest of the performances he is putting in. He could be a dark horse for Grand Slams in 2015 and will want to end 2014 strongly to put his name in the mix.

Gilles Simon classically struggles against Top 10 opponents, although his counter-punching style matches up well to the aggressive Berdych. He won’t be strong enough however, as the Czech number 6 is playing too well to be troubled by the Frenchman. Berdych in straight sets

Mikhail Youzhny (RUS) v Feliciano Lopez (ESP)

A surprise encounter for both men, who have done well to reach this stage of the Shanghai Masters. Lopez looks to be in fine form, having beaten Nadal and Sock. His mental strength has been questioned in the past and he will need to maintain belief if he it to get passed the experienced Russian Youzhny. Lopez in three sets

[1] Novak Djokovic (SRB) v [5] David Ferrer (ESP)

More from Tennis

A fascinating contest and certainly the game of the day. Ferrer turned his recent form around in sets 2 and 3 against Murray and may well pose a big threat to Djokovic, who has played quite a few matches recently.

Losing a set to Kukushkin in Round 3 shows that Djokovic is human, although I was doubting it. He is on a 27 match win streak in Asia and David Ferrer does not possess the weapons the bring this streak to an end. Djokovic in 3

Roger Federer (SUI) v Julien Benneteau (FRA)

I am sure that Roger Federer is going to develop hearing problems if he progresses any further in the Shanghai Masters, as the crowd absolutely adores him. His heroics against Mayer in Round 2 endeared him to the crowd even more, if that’s possible.

Benneteau has to hope Federer has an off day and even then the Frenchman will have to be clinical and take any opportunities that arise. Federer in straight sets
