Sacramento Kings owner Vivek Ranadive suggested the team should play four-on-five defense this season.

When Vivek Ranadive was asked by his daughter to coach her prep level basketball team, the software tycoon admitted he had no idea what he was doing. He never really watched a basketball game let alone partook in one. Yet, not wanting to disappoint his daughter the Sacramento Kings owner studied the game and eventually involved his affinity for mathematics.

In turn Ranadive and his daughter won their league championship and his love for the game grew into eventually buying the Kings. Since that time over a year ago, Vivek Ranadive has saved the Sacramento Kings from relocation and has turned them into a global franchise as they traveled to China to partake in the NBA’s international contests.

Continually looking to break the mold, Vivek Ranadive has suggested playing 4-on-5 defense according to Grantland.

"Owner Vivek Ranadivé has pitched the idea to the team’s brain trust of playing 4-on-5 defense and leaving one player to cherry-pick, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter."

It’s not known how far the idea actually went with the basketball minds in the Sacramento front office, though the team is not expected to implement such this season. However they could potentially try the unique defense with their NBA Developmental League team, the Reno Big Horns.

How exactly Ranadive expects the 4-on-5 defense to work isn’t known though it’s a struggle for most in the NBA to play defense. Perhaps Vivek Ranadive is thinking of playing the percentages. If you have a player cherry picking they’re going to score nearly every time down the court. Even a four-on-five defense will force the opposition to miss occasionally. Still, it sounds a bit too outlandish to ever actually happen.
