It’s seeming more and more as if Jim McElwain is the top target to become the head coach of the Florida Gators soon.

The head coaching search for the Florida Gators is not that old, however it appears as if Colorado State head coach Jim McElwain may be the man that the administration has tabbed to take over in Gainesville.

According to Brett McMurphy of ESPN on Tuesday, McElwain has officially emerged as the top target for the Gators and athletic director Jeremy Foley.

Since it was announced that Will Muschamp would not be retained for 2015, McElwain’s name was one of the first to pop up, and he has been at the top of the target lists ever since. McElwain has built himself a nice coaching resume, especially the last few seasons as the head coach of Colorado State.

He’s been the coach for the Rams since the 2012 season and he has consistently improved the program. After going 4-8 that first season, they finished 8-6 in 2013 and 10-2 this year.

It now seems as if it will only be a matter of time before the Gators announce the hiring of McElwain, and quite frankly, it might be the smartest move they can make at this point.

Update: Brett McMurphy is now reporting that Foley will meet with McElwain on Tuesday.
