The Cleveland Browns are making a change at quarterback, giving rookie Johnny Manziel his first ever NFL start. It is a bold move as the Browns try to keep their season from slipping away, but one that the fans are ready for given Manziel’s popularity.
Despite not playing a lot at the beginning of the season, Manziel’s jersey sales have accounted for 10 percent of the entire NFL this season, according to the Jersey Report, which tracks the sales of NFL jerseys at DICK’s Sporting Goods stores around the nation and online.
Those sales are more than that of Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck and Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III combined. Remember, Robert Griffin III wasn’t expected to have such a horrendous season between the draft and September.
Even more remarkable is that Manziel has the two highest selling jerseys in the NFL. The men’s version is the biggest seller in the league and the youth version of the jersey is the second biggest seller.
Manziel also gets a little help from the New York City market, where the Browns are the third most popular teams in terms of sales behind the New York Giants and the New York Jets.
