Browns release 2022 draft pick after allegations he threatened a woman

The Browns have parted ways with defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey right before training camp following new reports of Winfrey’s off-field issues.

The Cleveland Browns sure know how to pick ’em. Amid an ongoing investigation into defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey, the Browns decided to release the 2022 fourth-rounder ahead of training camp.

On Tuesday, Winfrey allegedly threatened a woman in Cleveland while holding a gun. Cleveland police are currently investigating the matter. According to the police report, Winfrey pulled out a gun in an argument with several women in a Cleveland hotel lobby, one of whom recorded part of the incident on her cell phone.

Winfrey, the team’s former fourth-round pick, was arrested last April for allegedly causing bodily harm to a woman he was dating in Texas. Those charges were dismissed after Winfrey underwent a pretrial diversion program.

The 22-year-old Winfrey appeared in 13 games in his rookie season and racked up 22 tackles, two quarterback hits, and 0.5 sacks; at the time, he reportedly was dealing with immaturity issues which saw him get benched for a handful of games.

Following the latest incident in Cleveland, Winfrey hasn’t gotten charged for any kind of crime yet, but the Browns probably decided Winfrey was more trouble than he was worth. A hypocritical sentiment, to be sure, considering Cleveland traded for the league’s most controversial quarterback a little over a year ago.

Nonetheless, when the Browns begin training camp on Saturday, Winfrey will be one face the franchise won’t miss too much despite spending a draft pick on the Oklahoma product. Cleveland’s defense will survive without him.
