It’s no secret that during the 2009 NBA Draft, the New York Knicks wanted to draft Stephen Curry. In fact, they attempted multiple trades in effort to move up but were continually rebuffed, leaving them with the No. 8 pick.
Ahead of them were the Golden State Warriors who owned the No. 7 pick and were also enamored with Stephen Curry, however, they were told to stay away from the point guard.
That’s the word from the New York Times who says Curry’s representatives told the Golden State Warriors that he wanted to play for the New York Knicks and he wouldn’t work out for the team.
"“(Larry) Riley calls me and says, ‘Can I watch a workout?’ ” Austin said. “I said, ‘No, you can’t.’ He says, ‘Can I talk to him?’ I said, ‘No, you can’t.’ I tell him that Stephen wants to be in New York. Stay away from him."
Despite the reluctance on the part of Curry and his agent, the Golden State Warriors decided to roll the dice and draft Stephen Curry just one selection spot ahead of the New York Knicks’ who ended up drafting Jordan Hill instead.
Who knows how things would have worked out for the New York Knicks had they been able to get their hands on Stephen Curry as so many times a players success is determined by fitting on a roster, but there’s no denying the Golden State Warriors made the right call.
Now an MVP candidate, Stephen Curry went from small college star to NBA super stardom.
