Josh Hamilton To Texas Rangers Was Never A Serious Option

According to a tweet from MLB reporter Jesse Sanchez, the Josh Hamilton trade rumors were never a serious matter

Last week, rumors of an attempted trade that would send OF Josh Hamilton to the Texas Rangers surfaced. Apparently, there was truth to those rumors. However, the scale of validity has been revealed today on Twitter.

More from Los Angeles Angels

Jesse Sanchez reports that the conversation between Hamilton’s Los Angeles Angels, and his former team, the Rangers, lasted all of 2 minutes before the notion was dismissed. It was also stated that the latter was the party not interested in the deal. Ouch. The Rangers, of all teams, should be well aware of the potential Hamilton has. Back in 2008, he had his first breakout season for the team, highlighted by an absolute demonstration of power at the Home Run Derby with 28 HR in a single round.

True; that was ultimately an exhibition, but the man was also the American League’s most valuable player in 2010, and was a part of 2 consecutive World Series Appearances in 2010, and 2011. During the latter Fall Classic, the Rangers were 1 out away from a the title, and if not for a guy by the name of David Freese, they might have gotten it.

So if nothing is to be made of this deal, it keeps the payroll of LA heading into next year relatively high. As it currently stands, the 2015 figure sits at around $120 million, with more than 40% of that total nestled on two players; Josh Hamilton and Albert Pujols. Both men have clearly not been worth the money they once commanded in free agency. Historically speaking though, baseball has never witness anyone live up to the value of a deal that large, especially one signed after a player is at the end of their prime (age 31 for both at the agreement of the terms).
