The Atlanta Falcons are just two years removed from a run to the NFC Championship game, but they’re going to be searching for a new head coach this offseason.

Who will be the next head coach of the Atlanta Falcons in 2015? That’s a lingering question that continues to build in relevance as Week 17 approaches kickoff and the clock literally begins to tick on the Falcons season. Head coach Mike Smith is expected to be fired at the end of the season — which could be by the end of the day.

The list of potential replacements for Smith is growing by the day, with names ranging from Rex Ryan to Teryl Austin. It appears that Rex Ryan may be considering a career in broadcasting in the immediate future while Austin may stick around Detroit for another season and cash in on his head coaching interest next season.

According to CBSSports.com insider Jason LasCanfora, the Atlanta Falcons are also interested in New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase.

There has been interest in both candidates dating back to last season, as the Cleveland Browns tried to each both unsuccessfully. McDaniels has already tried his hand at being a head coach and that ended rather embarrassingly and abruptly with the Denver Broncos a few years ago. Now that he’s had more years of tutelage under the wing of Bill Belichick, the Falcons may gamble on McDaniels maturity and his ability to make Matt Ryan elite.

Adam Gase is attractive for the same reason, but many believe he may just be piggybacking off the success of the naturally talented Peyton Manning in Denver.

Either way, the Falcons are starting to scout head coaches and they could end up moving quickly to replace Mike Smith should the team miss the postseason for the second consecutive season.
