The sports world lost one of it’s most iconic voices on Sunday when ESPN legend Stuart Scott died after battling cancer for seven long years of his life. The sports world that he loved covering so much is largely filled today with kids who grew up watching him in the 1990s and into the 2000s, and it’s a sad day for more than just ESPN, it’s a sad day for anyone who love sports as waking up in a world with Stuart Scott is a painfully quiet place.
On Sunday morning when news of Stuart Scott’s passing was announced, LeBron James took time out to remember the former SportsCenter star for the time they spent together.
"Can’t believe you’re gone from us! I am deeply saddened because not only will not be replaced as a anchor or reporter but more than that as a genuine cool person. What u did for our culture, bringing that Swag to reporting can only be copied(which I hear it today on tv watching sports). I would say not because they stealing your swag, it’s all out of RESPECT! It was always a breath of fresh fun air when u would show up and we’d chat up. Thank you so much for being u and giving us inner city kids someone we could relate to that wasn’t a player but was close enough to them. #RIPStuartScott #FuqCancer #GoneButSurelyNotForgotten"
Stuart Scott’s death is a dark day for sports as a whole, and that was seen in the reaction to his passing. No one gave up hope that Stuart Scott was going to beat his cancer, and he did exactly that.
He lived for seven years with cancer, not allowing it to take his life until there was no other choice. Stuart Scott’s cancer did not define him nor did it control him. Instead, Stuart Scott owned his cancer and didn’t allow it to take him until he said so.
The crowds may be loud and the games might be intense but the sports world is a quiet and less interesting place now that Stuart Scott is no longer in it.
