The Cleveland Browns have reportedly added Chan Gailey to their short list of potential offensive coordinators to replace Kyle Shanahan.

An old name has surfaced in the Cleveland Browns’ search for a new offensive coordinator. Former head coach Chan Gailey is among those being considered to replace Kyle Shanahan, who parted ways with the team after just one season.

While Gailey often struggled as a head coach, he’s undoubtedly sharp with an NFL offense and could be a surprise hire in Cleveland, where they can hardly seem to hang up a coach’s jacket before he slips out of town. That might change if the team opts for Gailey, who hasn’t received much attention from teams since serving as head coach of the Buffalo Bills for three seasons.

In Gailey, the Browns would have a coordinator who knows how to limit the impact of a less-than-optimal quarterback. Ryan Fitzpatrick owes million to Gailey’s system, which played to Fitzpatrick’s strength while emphasizing the running game, which buoyed the Buffalo offense during his tenure.

Browns fans would find Gailey’s specialty to lie in his game planning, where his various formations and pre-snap motions can keep a defense on its toes. This could be an ideal situation for either Brian Hoyer or Johnny Manziel as both struggled last year under Shanahan.

Marc Trestman was the coach of the Chicago Bears this past two seasons and took the brunt of the blame for a listless Bears offense that featured a struggling Jay Cutler.

Al Saunders was a member of the Super Bowl-winning St. Louis Rams coaching staff in the hey day of Kurt Warner, Isaac Bruce and the Greatest Show on Turf. He most recently served with the Oakland Raiders.

John DeFillipo also has ties with the Raiders, having served as their quarterbacks coach for five seasons. He was instrumental in working with rookie Derek Carr this season. Carr showed enough promise for the Raiders to think about picking outside of quarterback with their high first round pick.

Whoever the Browns hire must be able to handle the carousel at quarterback. If Brian Hoyer leaves town, that lucky coordinator will be charged with reining in Johnny Manziel both on and off the field.
