The Minnesota Timberwolves have reportedly made point guard Mo Williams available in trade talks.

Mo Williams has been one of the few bright spots for the Minnesota Timberwolves this year, but he simply doesn’t fit with the rebuilding process that they are currently going through. According to a report Marc Stein of ESPN, the Timberwolves have made Williams available in trade talks moving forward with the February 19th trading deadline coming up soon.

If that is indeed true, it will spice up the trade deadline a bit more. The deadline is already expected to be very busy this year with all of the teams looking to sell and plenty of teams trying to buy as well.

Throughout his career, Williams has been known as a point guard that is a very deadly scorer when the ball is in his hands. To prove that, just look at a game earlier this season against the Indiana Pacers when he scored 52 points and made it look very easy. Minnesota simply doesn’t have the need for a 32-year-old point guard at this point in their rebuilding process.

That being said, there are plenty of teams around the league that desperately need another scoring punch. There are plenty of contenders this season, and Williams is the type of player that can take a team over the top with the way that he scores the basketball.

This season in 36 games with Minnesota, Williams has averaged 12.5 points, 6.4 assists, and 2.3 rebounds per game. He has shot 39.9 percent from the floor overall and 33.8 percent from behind the three-point arc. Those numbers are partially due to the volume of shots he has had to put up and the poor roster that has been placed around him.

All of that being said, the scoring numbers along with his ability to make plays for his teammates makes him an extremely valuable trade chip. There are going to be quite a few teams that give Minnesota a call about his availability, and it will all depend on what type of value the Timberwolves are asking for in return.

Williams would likely welcome a change of scenery to a team that is in contention for the playoffs. He is beginning to get to the end of his career, and he doesn’t want to spend more time than necessary on a team that isn’t contending. Minnesota understands that, and they are going to do their best to get him a new home in the next few weeks.
