Man who urinated on Art Modell’s grave has charges dropped
By Phil Watson
Paul Serbu, the Ohio fan who posted a videotape of himself urinating on the grave of former Cleveland Browns owner Art Modell, has had charges against him dropped.
Paul Serbu has to be feeling very relieved.
The 62-year-old Franklin, Ohio, man had been charged with disorderly conduct after posting a video of himself urinating on the grave of the late Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens owner Art Modell.

Serbu was pissed, like many Cleveland fans were, about the way Modell ripped the franchise out of its longtime Ohio home and moved it to Baltimore following the 1995 season.
Baltimore County Deputy State’s Attorney John Cox leaked word to The Baltimore Sun Wednesday that charges were dropped against Serbu after Cox received information about a “physical condition” that Serbu has.
Cox, however, did not elaborate, saying it would be inappropriate. Serbu’s privacy appeared to be the No. 1 concern.
Cox also said he spoke to David Modell, the son of the late owner, about the charges.
“We talked about a resolution that we all felt was appropriate,” Cox said. “Mr. Modell suggested that this individual have an opportunity to apologize and then converse with him on his radio show.”
The younger Modell co-hosts the Armstrong Williams show on SiriusXM Urban View. He hopes the radio appearance—not yet scheduled—can be used as an opportunity to talk about accountability and appropriate behavior.
Gee whiz, that would be great.
Modell did add that he does not want to “abuse” Serbu on the air.
“It’s just an opportunity for him to kind of come clean … and apologize to my family and we’ll move on,” Modell said.
In the video, the man later identified as Serbu recorded himself removing a Ravens jersey to reveal a Lyle Alzado Browns jersey.
Then he appeared to urinate out of the bottom of his pants leg using a catheter and a tube.
“As far as [urinating] on your grave, I had no choice,” Serbu said in the video. “Anyone who says, ‘[It’s been] 15 years, let it go’ … you let it go.”
Oh, Serbu let it go all right. And it was a brazen midday affair; none of this sneaking around in the wee, wee hours for him.
Modell died in 2012 at the age of 87 and was an NFL owner for 43 years after purchasing the Browns in 1961 for a then-record $4 million.
Serbu could have faced a maximum of two years in jail and a $500 fine if convicted, Cox said.
