Announcement of new Cleveland Browns logo to come Feb. 24

So long, orange helmet?

That may be the case. The Cleveland Browns, in a letter sent to fan club presidents, revealed that they have chosen a new logo and will reveal it Tuesday.

“The Cleveland Browns have re-branded their logo and we want you to be among the first to see it!” the letter, which has been confirmed as authentic, says. “The logo will be launched next Tuesday, February 24th. Continue to check your email regarding the chance to be one of the first to see it!”

Local Cleveland radio station 92.3 The Fan has reported that Brownie the elf, a past team logo from the 1950s, will not be part of the new logo.

The Browns have also announced plans to reveal new uniforms this offseason.

The Browns’ logo right now is an orange helmet. It’s unique in all the major sports to have a logo that’s simply a color, and it definitely wouldn’t work if it wasn’t on a football helmet; imagine a baseball cap that’s just orange, or a basketball jersey that’s just generic orange with no writing on it.

Next: Are These The New Cleveland Browns Uniforms?

The Browns have managed to make this work for years, but it’s always been a little silly that they don’t have a logo.

So with Brownie the elf ruled out, what kind of logo this will be is anyone’s guess. It’s hard to say what the visual representation of a “Brown” is, considering that’s not a real thing. Maybe it will just be an orange question mark? Or a picture of Paul Brown’s face? Courtney Brown’s face? Maybe it will be a brown helmet instead of an orange one this time? Who knows. Any guesses, however ridiculous, will be welcome in the comments section.

The Browns could certainly use some positive PR at this point, considering the offseason they’ve had.

Between rookie quarterbacks entering rehab, wide receivers being suspended for 16 games (again), offensive coordinators preparing slideshows on why they want to leave, and GMs in the middle of a texting scandal, any small bit of positive news would be welcome, which may have factored into the decision to reveal a new logo at least a little bit.

Then again, at this point Browns fans would be happy with anything that doesn’t make the team seem like a train wreck, boat explosion, 20-car pileup, or any other transportation-related disasters. Also, winning. They would like winning, please.
