Phoenix Suns split up Morris twins, clear cap space to sign LaMarcus Aldridge

The Phoenix Suns are clearing cap space for LaMarcus Aldridge, trading away one of the Morris twins and a handful of assets for a draft pick in 2020.

When LaMarcus Aldridge hit free agency, it was clear that a team from the Southwest Division would probably land him. What no one saw coming was that said team might end up being the Phoenix Suns.

After the Spurs launched themselves into the driver’s seat for Aldridge on Tuesday, the Suns slowly started to jockey for position to land the veteran forward in a weird series of events. The strangest, and most obvious, of those moves came on Thursday when the Suns dumped salary overboard in a trade with the Pistons.

According to Adrian Wojnarowksi from Yahoo! Sports, the Suns have split up the Morris twins by trading Marcus to the Pistons along with Danny Granger and Reggie Bullock.

There’s no maybe about the Suns being in the running to sing LaMarcus Aldridge now. In fact, the trade has given Phoenix the cap space to acquire Aldridge without needing to work out a sign-and-trade with the Blazers.

The last time the Spurs made a big run at a free agent was when they went all-in water Jason Kidd. That soured the Spurs on the free agency process, and it appears they’ve been had again. There’s not promise that the Suns will land Aldridge, but they’ve altered the makeup of their roster and tailored it specifically for him.

If he burns them now, that’d be cold. All indications seem to now point towards LMA heading to Phoenix — and that’s fantastic for basketball.
