Having no clear American League MVP who is standing out at the moment, the race just got even cloudier following Miguel Cabrera’s calf injury.

The American League is filled with talent on the diamond. It can be argued that the best players in baseball are in the AL, even despite the handful of World Series titles by National League teams in recent years. And while the AL MVP race figured to be a close one throughout the second half of the season, a recent shakeup has made it that much more intriguing.

Much like the NL’s MVP race shakeup following Giancarlo Stanton’s four-to-six week injury, the loss of Miguel Cabrera for six weeks due to a calf strain could spell the end to his hopes for the crown.

Up until this point Cabrera looked to be leading the pack, thanks to batting .350 and proving just why he’s the best hitter on the planet. While it hurts the Detroit Tigers immensely, it’s also bad for the game of baseball to see one of its biggest stars sidelined heading into next week’s All-Star Game.

Now, it seems, the rest of the American League is working to take advantage of the absence, with many trying to play catch-up in the MVP race. Let’s take a look at the power ranking for the top AL MVP candidates following the Cabrera injury. Yes, Miguel is still on the list, people.
