Auburn vs. LSU, 45-21: Full highlights, final score and more
Leonard Fournette ran for a career-high 228 yards and 3 touchdowns in No. 13 LSU’s huge win over No. 18 Auburn.
Leonard Fournette and No. 13 LSU ran all over No. 18 Auburn in a 45-21 blowout win Saturday afternoon at Tiger Stadium.
As expected, the LSU offense featured a heavy dose of Fournette early on. Fournette rumbled down the field for a 71-yard gain on the first play of the game, setting up a two yard touchdown run by Brandon Harris.
Harris isn’t asked to do much downfield in LSU’s offense, but proved to be effective enough early on Saturday. After Auburn stalled on its first drive, Harris scrambled for 27 yards on a key third down and found Colin Jeter on a one-yard touchdown pass to put LSU up 14-0 near the end of the first.
Meanwhile,Gus Malzahn couldn’t get anything working for the Auburn offense. Jeremy Johnson looked rattled for the third consecutive game, losing grip on the ball for a big loss on Auburn’s first drive and throwing an interception to end its second.
LSU went up 24-0 with two minutes left in the first half behind Fournette, who had a career-high 169 yards in the first 28 minutes of the game. With Auburn wearing down in the punishing Baton Rouge heat, it looked like things could get out of hand.
Johnson regrouped at halftime, scoring on an impressive 65 yard quarterback keeper on Auburn’s opening drive to put the Tigers on the board. But Fournette led LSU right back down the field, punishing Auburn defenders along the way and ending any chance of a comeback. Johnson would add two touchdown passes in garbage time to at least give him some confidence moving forward.
LSU got a bit of a scare on Fournette’s third touchdown of the day after he got up limping following a dive into the end zone. However, Fournette was found to only have a small knee bruise and was walking around fine moments later.
Three Stars
Leonard Fournette, RB, LSU. Dominating performance makes Fournette the early season Heisman leader.
Brandon Harris, QB, LSU. Didn’t have to do too much in the passing game, but caused Auburn’s defense some problems with his legs and totaled three touchdowns.
Jamal Adams, S, LSU. Intercepted Johnson in the second quarter to lead strong team defensive effort.
Highlights
Odds
LSU entered as a touchdown favorite and never looked seriously challenged to cover the spread.
Next Week
LSU finally gets a nonconference game with a trip to Syracuse on Saturday in what should be a walkover. Auburn will try to regroup with a home contest against Mississippi State.
