Connor McDavid hit the ice for the first time in three months, and he’s already back to scoring highlight-reel goals.

The Edmonton Oilers vs. the Columbus Blue Jackets is the type of basement brawl that wouldn’t normally get a lot of attention, except for the fact that it’s featuring Connor McDavid. Edmonton’s first overall pick is playing for the first time in almost three months after suffering a nasty clavicle injury against the Flyers.

And it took him almost no time to make his mark:

McDavid came in surrounded with hype, with a lot of people calling him the next Sidney Crosby. The fact that he’s able to score goals like this after such a long layoff helps to justify those claims. Granted, the Blue Jackets are a bad team but most players would exhibit rust after being out for such a long time. But not McDavid.

It begs the question of where the Oilers would be if he was playing this whole time. It’s also interesting to see if he can surge himself back into the Calder conversation. Had he not been injured and played at the pace he was playing at, he might have been considered the runaway favorite. Now, others have stepped up including Artemi Panarin, Dylan Larkin, and second overall pick Jack Eichel.

If McDavid can actually drag this team to the playoffs, that might be enough for him to win the Calder and become the savior of this mediocre Oilers franchise.
