Mike Singletary is headed back to the ranks of the NFL.

After serving as linebackers coach for the Minnesota Vikings for three years, Mike Singletary left Minnesota in 2014. Before that, he was the head coach for the San Francisco 49ers for two and a half seasons.

Despite interviewing with the New York Giants and being linked to the vacated head coaching position at Baylor, his alma mater, Mike Singletary’s return to the NFL will be with the Los Angeles Rams as a defensive advisor.

Mike Singletary’s announcement comes mere hours after the passing of his friend and defensive coordinator with the ’85 Bears, Buddy Ryan. Singletary spent all of his twelve seasons in the NFL with the Chicago Bears. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1998. Singletary was one of the greatest NFL linebackers of all time, and has been a serviceable coach in the NFL.

He will aid head coach Jeff Fisher in turning the talent of the Los Angeles Rams into a serviceable defense. The Rams underperformed in 2015, despite having a solid amount of defensive talent. The Rams are a perennial middle of the pack team, and will look to Singletary to help push their team over the top.

The Rams finally have a solid QB in rookie Jared Goff, one of the NFL’s budding stars in Todd Gurley, and a dynamic receiver in Tavon Austin. The Rams have potential, but right now that’s all they have. Mike Singletary will provide veteran experience and analysis that might push the Rams out of the middle of the pack.
