Andrew Luck signed the biggest deal in NFL history because the Indianapolis Colts had to do it.

Let’s be honest here, everybody saw this coming. When Andrew Luck came out of college he was regarded as the next big thing and was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft. While he has yet to live up to the heavy expectations, he has yet to fail or be deemed a bust in any sense. You add in that he has led three teams to the playoffs with the Colts’ recent history of building around young quarterbacks and signing them to lucrative deals — this should be no shock.

Still, as he now signs the most lucrative contract in NFL history his play will be put under the greatest spotlight. Every game and every mistake will bring the questions as to whether he is worth it or not.

There are plenty of reasons to question the deal. He has thrown 55 interceptions in 55 games, he has thrown nine touchdowns to 12 interceptions in the playoffs, heck, he is still recovering from a season-ending injury last year. Nonetheless, when you look at the entire big picture of the league there is no way the Colts could not have made this move.

That being said, here are the five reasons why the extension of Andrew Luck was the right move.
