Western fighting games have been on the downturn, lately. Street Fighter V remains a beast, the Super Smash Bros games are big Evo 2016 draws, and Killer Instinct has the fewest registrants out of any title at this year’s tournament event. Nevertheless, there’s a lot to like in Mortal Kombat XL, featuring new characters making their first Evo appearance.
The “XL” expansion has brought on a number of guest characters and special variations that make for interesting fighters. Alien, from Ridley Scott’s renown film series, now sits on top the perceived tier lists. Bo Rai Cho brings an unparalleled flatulence tech, the likes Birdie wishes he had. Leatherface is here to slice some faces straight up.
Warner Bros. Interactive doesn’t seem to be giving up on Mortal Kombat XL after Evo 2016. At least, with their $50,000 prize pool funding (perhaps money saved from outright leaving the PC platform out the dry), they aren’t showing anything but strong support for tournament players.

Furthermore, with over 700 Mortal Kombat XL players competing at Evo 2016, those who have been secretly working on their tech online will finally have a strong chance to make some cash. The money up for grabs is too tantalizing not to spend $10 on, if you are a skilled fighting game player. Who knows; some unfortunate soul knocked out of Street Fighter V pools could end up doing well on their second-best title!
