Blake Griffin embarrassed the Los Angeles Clippers by punching an equipment guy this past season, and now Matias Testi no longer works for the team.

Blake Griffin had already been sidelined nearly a month by a left quad injury he suffered on Jan. 23, and that was in line to derail any hope the Los Angeles Clippers had to set themselves up for a deep playoff run. Then he got involved in a heated altercation with Matias Testi, a team equipment manager and apparently a close friend, outside of a Toronto restaurant. Griffin suffered a broken hand after punching Testi multiple times.

It’s unclear if the incident with Griffin was a factor, or if he quit or was fired, but a Clippers representative told TMZ Sports that Testi no longer works for the team. Brad Turner of the Los Angeles Times has confirmed the news.

The team suspended Griffin four games for his actions, and over the 45 total games he missed the Clippers held things together well (30-15 record) and wound up earning the No. 4 seed in the Western Conference playoffs. But they lost a first-round series to the Portland Trail Blazers in six games, after taking a 2-0 lead, as Griffin was clearly rusty and not at full strength. Trade rumors have surrounded Griffin this summer, but a deal to move him seems unlikely heading into what looks sure to be the final year of his contract (player option for 2017-18).

Griffin and Testi appeared to bury the hatchet by shaking hands prior to a game in February, for what that’s worth. But an incident like the one in January, which easily seems to qualify as assault, may have damaged their friendship irreparably. The working relationship between Testi and the Clippers was bound to end before next season, and now that has come to fruition.
