Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler expected to miss 2-3 weeks
After an abysmal showing Monday night, and a thumb injury to boot, Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler is expected to miss a few games.
For the first half of a Week 1 loss to the Houston Texans, Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler looked very good, going 10-for-13 for 156 yards. But in the game-and-a-half since then, “Bad Jay” showed up, with things coming to a head after an interception against the Philadelphia Eagles Monday.
Cutler left the game in the third quarter with a right thumb injury, which may date back to the season opener. Reports about Cutler’s injury and how long he’ll be sidelined have varied a little, from day-to-day to a possible lengthy absence, but now his recovery timeline has gotten a bit more definite.
Brian Hoyer is in line to start under center for the Bears against the Dallas Cowboys, Detroit Lions and possibly the Indianapolis Colts over the next three weeks. But it seems possible Cutler will miss more than two or three games, and based on Rapoport’s report that could be known very soon.

Hoyer is fairly accomplished as backup quarterbacks go, with 22 starts over the last two seasons with the Cleveland Browns (2014) and Houston Texans (2015). The Bears have multiple other issues, and some other notable injuries coming out of Monday night’s game, but Hoyer can at least hold down the fort for however long Cutler is out.

Cutler’s future with the Bears is an ongoing question, and this injury will bring it back to the surface. But if he is out awhile,
has suggested the chances are good Cutler will be back next season. That is surely not what most Bears’ fans want to hear. But if things keep going downhill this year, the team should finally be in position to draft a viable quarterback of the future next spring.
