Embattled football player Greg Hardy reportedly got arrested for possession of a controlled substance on Monday.

Greg Hardy has had a tumultuous few years in the NFL. He started as a rising defensive end for the Carolina Panthers, seemingly being on his way for stardom at the position. However, a domestic violence charge would lead to a multi-game suspension for the 28-year-old in 2015. Despite this, the Dallas Cowboys would sign him to a one-year deal, hoping for a reclamation project.

While Hardy mostly stayed on the field for the Cowboys, he often got involved in controversy during the game. This included an argument with star wide receiver, Dez Bryant. The organization chose not to re-sign the Mississippi alumnus, and 31 teams passed on him in free agency. We’re three weeks into the NFL season, and no one has publicly looked to sign him either, which arguably isn’t surprising.

Well, Monday’s news won’t help, as Noah Bullard and Pat Doney of NBC 5 are reporting that Hardy was arrested for possession of a controlled substance.

This arrest could mark the end of Hardy’s attempts in getting back to the NFL. He proved to be talented, racking up 40 sacks across five full seasons. However, the off-the-field problems are too much to overlook. It’s not worth the distraction when someone else could quietly step into a defensive end position and not be a nuisance in the media. Having allegedly hit a woman, and now drug possession, may make all 32 NFL teams’ decision to turn away from him concrete, if there had been any doubt.
