Tom Crean gets into it with a fan following loss to Wisconsin (Video)

Tom Crean is being yelled at by everybody. Including Maryland fans!

Tom Crean has been under a lot of heat ever since his arrival to Indiana. Despite two Sweet 16 appearances the fans have demanded more from a program that believes itself to be one of the elite in college basketball. There is some merit to the fans putting the program on that high of a pedestal. It wasn’t that long ago the NCAA Tourney appearances were the norm. The expectations were set long before Crean took over and they’ll continue well after he’s left.

Still, it seems weird that so many fans are abhorrently against the idea of Crean. His successes are minimized while the focus is shifted on to his failures. It’s reached such a boiling point that fans are willing to take a shot at him whenever possible. After tonight’s loss to Wisconsin, Crean walked off the court to jeers but one stuck out louder than the rest. A fan leaned over the railing to tell Crean he “can’t coach and ruined the program” before storming off. The kicker? This fan is wearing a Maryland shirt.

Never mind the Maryland shirt for now. Let’s focus on the statement. Crean did not ruin Indiana basketball. The Hoosiers have never been the same since Bob Knight left and honestly he’s met the status quo. Is he in the tournament every single year? No, but the high points are far higher than anything Mike Davis did aside from a lone NCAA Finals run.

With that out of the way, what in the world is a Maryland fan doing giving Crean a lesson on coaching? Is he so inebriated that he forgot which team he cheers for? Actually, this might be a trash talk throwback to long ago when Tom Crean told a former Indiana assistant they “Helped wreck the program” What was this fan’s true intention? We’ll never know for sure.
