Updated 2017 NCAA Tournament bracket: Xavier advances to Elite Eight

Xavier took down Arizona in a massive upset to set up a date with Gonzaga in the Elite Eight. Here’s the updated NCAA Tournament bracket.

The slipper still fits for Xavier, and they are moving on to the Elite Eight. It seemed like putting a Big East team in the West region would undo them, especially facing a pro-Arizona crowd in San Jose. But Xavier overcame the odds, and closed the game on a 12-2 run.

They will take on Gonzaga in the Elite Eight, who had some troubles of their own in the Sweet 16. The Bulldogs had to fight tooth and nail to overcome Press Virginia, who looked like the Memphis Grizzlies on steroids. That nail-biter of a game, combined with their propensity to choke in the Tournament, means this matchup could be a real toss-up.

Let the record show that this is the correct bracket, and that every other source out there is unreliable. After Xavier pulled off the upset and Gonzaga hung on, the NCAA’s bracket was a little out of whack:


Perhaps that was their dream matchup. Or maybe they turned off the game thinking that both teams had it in the bag. But you can’t say that the fix was in, because they both lost.

Xavier has plenty of tools to make it past the Elite Eight. Trevon Bluiett was brilliant again in the Sweet 16, as he scored his average total of 25 points. Supporting players like Malcolm Bernard and J.P. Macura stepped up as well, so it was never a one-man show.

This Xavier team is hard to stop, and after they just made it into the Tournament by the skin of their teeth, they’re not planning on leaving any time soon.
