The newest Jets defensive back is quite confident in his ability, barring one condition.

We have all gotten quite use to self-proclaimed prophecies in the sports world, and on this Memorial Day weekend, we have found yet another. Athletes have egos, and they are bound to show out. It’s just the nature of the game, but they are also showcasing their confidence. For cornerback Morris Claiborne formally of the Dallas Cowboys, he is making it clear what he thinks of himself: “I feel like I can be the No. 1 corner in this league if I’m healthy … when I’m healthy.  When I’m out there playing and I’m healthy and I’m on my game, I don’t feel like there is anybody better than me” (New York Post).

Yikes. Alright, obviously this is a bold statement, but it’s something I’d want to see as a coach. Claiborne’s career has been extremely disappointing thus far, due to the fact he has not lived up to expectations. The sixth overall pick back in 2012, the LSU alum has struggled with injuries mightily. Although his play has improved since entering the league, Claiborne has not been on the field enough to make a consistent difference. There has been plenty of talented players over the years who have washed out due to a lack of durability. Claiborne is dangerously close to becoming one of those players. Hopefully, a fresh start with the New York Jets will help.

Now a member of the Jets for at least a year, Todd Bowles is most likely banking on Claiborne to stay healthy and play well. Gang Green’s secondary is extremely young right now despite some serious potential in guys like Jamal Adams. Claiborne will have every chance to prove his worth come training camp, as long as he can stay healthy. Time will tell.
