Josh Donaldson hits home run to rare area of Rogers Centre
Home runs at Rogers Centre generally stay in the first few decks of seats, but Josh Donaldson reached a rare area Tuesday night.
The Toronto Blue Jays welcomed third baseman Josh Donaldson and shortstop Troy Tulowitzki back to the lineup last Friday, and they both played a role in a 17-run outburst against the Cincinnati Reds on Monday.
In the bottom of fourth inning Tuesday night, Donaldson was still looking for his first home run since coming off the disabled list.
With a nice center cut offering from Reds starter Asher Wojciechowski, Donaldson no longer had to search or hope for that elusive homer.
As Blue Jays’ announcer Buck Martinez pointed out immediately on the call, Donaldson’s 435-foot blast reached the fifth deck at Rogers Centre. That puts him in two rare clubs, as 11 Blue Jay home runs (by nine players) have been hit to the upper deck at the stadium and 16 different players have now done it overall. Initially named SkyDome, Rogers Centre opened in 1989. Donaldson is the first Blue Jay to reach that rare home run air since Edwin Encarnacion in 2015.

Jose Canseco hit three fifth-deck home runs at SkyDome/Rogers Centre during his career, including the first ever at the stadium in Game 4 of the 1989 ALCS as a member of the Oakland Athletics. Those of us that are old enough to remember it surely do, but it’s still a sight to be beheld now. There was, and probably still is, a seat in the upper deck at Rogers Centre that marks the spot Canseco’s epic home run hit.
Donaldson is a proven power hitter himself, with the Twitter handle to back it up (@BringerofRain20). Tuesday night’s homer was just his third so far this year, but keep in mind he missed six weeks with a calf injury.
