Beer Review Of The Week:

Avery Brewing’s White Rascal

I’ve had a few beers by Boulder, CO’s Avery Brewing and have usually come away impressed. Their Ellie’s Brown Ale is very good. So I was expecting good things from the White Rascal. Here’s the bottle description:

"A truly authentic Belgian-style white ale, this Rascal is unfiltered (yep, that’s yeast on the bottom!) and cleverly spiced with coriander and Curacao orange peel producing a refreshingly zesty classic ale."

As someone that likes unfiltered wheat beers and traditional European style witbiers, this sounded appealing. However, I walked away disappointed from this one. The beer wasn’t bad, there just wasn’t hardly any taste to it. The “cleverly spiced with coriander and Curacao orange peel producing a refreshingly zesty classic ale” claim just flat out didn’t happen for me. Again, there wasn’t anything unpleasant about it, I just didn’t get anything flavor wise that would have me coming back for another round. A very forgettable beer. In a word…..”meh”.

My Rating (1-10): 6

A Good Way To Pass The Time This Week:

Check out House Of Cards on Netflix.

I was slow to come around to this show. I’ve always admired Kevin Spacey as an actor, but I’m not much for politics, so the subject matter didn’t really peak my interest. However, after being told by several people that it was excellent and seeing people going crazy on Twitter over the just released second season I decided to give it a shot. I’m glad I did. Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright (who plays Spacey’s wife) are both AMAZING in this show and their acting abilities make this show completely intriguing regardless of your interest in politics. I was also a little skeptical of a show completely produced by Netflix, but wow is it impressive. It looks and is as well made (or better) as anything HBO or the networks have ever done. If you’re looking for something to watch to take your mind off of no football, this one is worth your time.

Rant Of The Week:

NFL Combine/Draft Twitter

Look, I’m starving for anything NFL related at this point just like everyone else. So of course I’ll tune in and check out some of the NFL combine coverage. However, I dread getting on Twitter while the combine is going on. I follow a lot of NFL reporters and some draft analysts and for about 360 days out of the year, I love it. However, I don’t need my timeline blown up by 15 people all tweeting out the 40 yard dash time of some offensive lineman from North Idaho Tech that will probably get drafted in the 7th round. If that wasn’t bad enough, the overreaction to some of the results are always unbearable. Someone runs slow and goes from a first rounder to a 4th rounder despite being dominant in college. Someone else runs fast and suddenly is a first round product despite the fact that their game tape doesn’t look anything like a first rounder.

So please, enjoy the fact that there is new football related news out there, but don’t go overboard. Don’t make your mind up on a prospect based on their combine results. Now a days you can find game cut ups on youtube for almost all the main prospects. Watch some actual game film, that’s where the goods are and PLEASE don’t feel the need to tweet out every result for every prospect at the combine!

I think that about does it for this week. Next week I’ll unveil my first mock draft of the offseason. Until then, find yourself a comfortable chair, watch some House Of Cards, and try not to get carried away with combine results.

Thanks for reading.
