Beer Review Of The Week:

Rogue Ale’s Mocha Porter

A couple of weeks ago I reviewed my first beer by Rogue Ale, their Hazelnut Brown Nectar. It was fantastic so this week I decided to give their Mocha Porter a try. This is another beer that is right in my wheelhouse. I love porters in general, and mocha porters are some of my favorites. This one didn’t disappoint. It has a nice big roasty malt flavor (probably because it used 8 different malts) with just enough chocolate and coffee mixed in. Some mocha porters can be overly sweet, but I thought this one was just right. The roasted malts are the stars of the show with the coffee and chocolate in supporting roles. There is some hops mixed in to boot (IBU rating of 47) but I didn’t find it to be a bitter beer. Overall, I recommend it and am officially becoming a big fan of Rogue Ales.

My Rating (1-10): 8.5

A Way To Pass The Time This Week:

Check out the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

I’ll admit that I was not sold on Fallon at first. When he first started hosting Late Night I thought he was the worst talk show host on television. He seemed awkward and uncomfortable. While Fallon still has a bit of that same awkward nervousness about him, he’s found a way to make it endearing. I think the reason I like him is because he seems genuine and humble. The fact that so many big Hollywood names seem to be behind him and wanting him to do well makes me think he must be the real deal. Plus, his house band is the Roots for crying out loud! His “History of Rap”, “Lip Sync Battles”, and other skits that he’s carried over from his Late Night days are classic. If you haven’t given him a try yet, I would. In my opinion he’s better than Leno, Letterman, and the rest of the late night options.

Rant Of The Week:

The NFL Network’s Combine Coverage

For me, watching the NFL Combine is one of the more frustrating NFL viewing experiences around. I can’t seem to not watch since my NFL addiction has me starving for every tidbit of information at this point in the offseason, but let’s be honest, it’s a horrible television experience. I don’t know that there’s a better way to do it, but it drives me crazy that they’ll show some no name from South Puerto Rico Tech do a three cone drill and Mike Mayock will share some random information about him just to show everyone that he’s watched his tape, but then they’ll go to commercial right when a major prospect is about to run their 40 and then not show the replay. It also drives me absolutely insane when a major prospect will run a drill and they’ll just talk over it and give no insight to how he did because they’re blabbering on about some other guy that will probably be a late round pick or undrafted free agent. This is coming from someone that usually likes Rich Eisen and Mike Mayock.

Every year I’m excited to watch it and every year I come away going did I gain anything from actually watching that? Would I have been just fine looking up their times and results after it was all over? I’m sure the answer is yes, but when there isn’t going to be any NFL games for several more months the truth is I’d probably tune in for anything NFL related just to get my fix. It just seems to me that with how great the NFL is at putting out a great product most of the time that they could find SOME way to make the combine a better television experience.

That does it for the Armchair Quarterback this week. Please let me know what you think of this first mock draft in the comments below.
