Ivan Nova was one of New York’s best starting pitchers last season, going 9-6 with a respectable 3.10 ERA and 1.28 WHIP. The 2014 season was quite different for the 27-year-old, as he was 2-2 with an inflated 8.27 ERA prior to suffering a season-ending tear in his right ulnar collateral ligament.

That injury resulted in Nova undergoing Tommy John surgery, making him New York’s first casualty in the 2014 season.

This was the season that a lot of Yankees fans—myself included—thought was Nova’s season. He was banged up in 2013, but he still managed to pitch effectively and give New York a bunch of quality starts. This season was supposed to be Nova’s.

Instead, he’ll spend the remainder of the season watching the Bronx Bombers on TV while New York tries to piece its starting rotation together.

A guy like Nova may be replaceable, but New York certainly didn’t plan for the other injuries to its staff that lied ahead.
