After LeBron James decided to sign with the Miami Heat in 2010, the Los Angeles Lakers hatched a plan that was four seasons in the making. From that point on, the franchise made it so come the current offseason, they’d have plenty of available cap money.

That part of their plan worked out to perfection, however, their courting of a big name star did not. They made the phone calls to LeBron James’ agent, who didn’t seem interested. They hosted Carmelo Anthony, but he seemed more intrigued with the Chicago Bulls and New York Knicks. That left the Los Angeles Lakers at the alter, void of the big name they so desired.

Despite that, the Lakers are still holding out hope that they’ll be able to bring in the franchise player they so desire and their prime target is Kevin Love, so says Bill Ingram.

"They are hoping Kevin Love doesn’t sign any kind of extension . . .he’s their prime target now that LeBron is committed in Cleveland."

It’s been said that Kevin Love, who has all but requested a trade out of Minnesota, isn’t likely to sign an in-season extension as he’d like to hit free agency and get as much money as possible. Of course, whomever acquires Love via trade will own his Bird Rights meaning they are the team who will be able to offer the power forward the most money and years. That may be a problem for the Lakers, but they still appear to be lusting over the Southern California native.
