NFL: Which team will go worst to first in 2014?
No. 5: Tampa Bay Buccaneers
I loved the Lovie Smith hire. I think they have the pieces on defense to make Smith’s Tampa-2 defense work. I loved the idea of pairing Mike Evans with Vincent Jackson. I think Josh McCown showed he can produce solid numbers when he had a couple of stud WRs that are capable of beating defensive backs on a regular basis last year in Chicago and now he has similar weapons to work with in TB.
Given those things you might think Tampa would be one of my top picks to go from worst to first. However, I’m not confident that a veteran journeyman like McCown has a full season of good play in him. That combined with two playoff caliber teams in New Orleans and Carolina in the division (plus Atlanta) will make things hard on the Bucs. I think they’ll be a much improved team that could surprise some people, but until they prove that they have the QB position solved, I’ll remain a little skeptic.
