Geno Smith vs. Michael Vick

The battle in New York is the polar opposite of the other four competitions on this list. In the rest of the battles the veteran QB is the starter until the young QB overtakes him, but with the Jets the roles are reversed. The Jets are giving second year QB Geno Smith every opportunity to be the starter, but are leaving the door open to letting Vick be the starter if he shines and Geno stumbles.

In the Jets first preseason game neither QB did anything to change their situation. Here were their numbers:

Smith: 4-6, 33 yards, 0 TDs, 0 INTs
Vick: 3-6, 17 yards, 0 TDs, 0 INTs

Pro Football Focus graded Geno Smith at a +0.7 overall grade and Mike Vick at a -0.2. In order for Vick to overtake Smith he’s going to have to do a lot more than complete three short passes and a pitiful 2.8 yards per completion.

I’m actually a believer in Geno Smith. I see a quarterback that can deliver the ball with accuracy and make all the NFL caliber throws. I think he’s both the best option for the Jets right now and a player that could develop into a good NFL caliber starter as his career progresses. He will still have his struggles, but so would Vick.
