When the final whistle blew, it was Santos Laguna who came away with a 1-0 win on a late heart-breaking goal to put Chivas away.
In the first half, Chivas appeared to be the better team. They were dominating possession and putting together the more impressive offensive efforts, but they were unable to find the back of the net with Laguneros goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez holding strong — which is a story all too familiar for Chivas fans.
For Santos Laguna, much of the game was spent playing on their heels and simply looking for an opportunity to counter.
The game went into the half with a scoreless draw.
There was a slight delay near the end of the match, Chivas watched midfielder Angel Reyna go down with an injury just outside of the box in the 80th minute. After Reyna was loaded onto a cart, play resumed.
Santos Laguna conceded a corner kick in the closing minutes which gave Chivas an opportunity to go ahead.
However, Carlos Salcido had his shot deflected from the center of the box and the counter attack was on for Laguneros.
Carlos Darwin Quintero took the deflected shot and raced down the pitch beating every member of the Chivas defense. Jose Rodriguez was the last defense for Rojiblancos, but Darwin Quintero made one final move after going the length of the pitch and put the ball into a wide open net to give Santos Laguna a 1-0 lead in the 87th minute.
It was a heart-breaker for Chivas, who had put together a solid effort in the first 80+ minutes, but controlling more than 60 percent of the possession was not enough to secure Rojiblancos the win.
The pressure is now on Chivas more than ever if they want to avoid relegation.
