Steven Moya, Detroit Tigers

Raw power is what Moya brings to Detroit. The Tigers were aggressive in promoting Moya this September, and he boasts some of the minor leagues’ most impressive power. There were real questions entering the season if Moya’s hit tool was going to be enough for his power to translate into game power. Moya is a huge human being, standing at 6’6”, 230 lbs., but he has an aggressive approach at the plate and strikes out a ton – 161 strikeouts in 549 plate appearances for AA Erie this year, and this is an improvement from 2013, where he struck out 106 times in 388 plate appearances in Class A, before suffering an injury which required Tommy John surgery.

Staying healthy has been an issue for Moya in his career, as is taking a walk – Moya had 23 walks (two were intentional walks) in AA Erie, the most he’s had in a season in his career (he had 18 walks in 2013). Still, the power is legit, and with Miguel Cabrera struggling in the home run department (compared to his usual excellence), Moya will likely get a shot to prove he belongs, even if the general prediction is of a fourth outfielder, at best. The Tigers rushed Moya up to the majors, and hope he can help Detroit find a spark to seize the AL Central.
