Such was on display Sunday afternoon as Mathews went down hard against the Seattle Seahawks and could be seen clutching at his leg. Understanding this was no minor stinger, the Chargers immediately called for the cart and quickly rushed Ryan Mathews off the field.
The team put the former Fresno State product through a battery of tests and while the injury wasn’t as bad as it could have been, it still wasn’t good as the team announced he has a sprained MCL.
How long will that keep him off the field though? While the San Diego Chargers and Ryan Mathews hope he’ll return sooner, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com believes the running back will be out 4-5 weeks.
While Mathews is obviously San Diego’s top back, the Chargers still have Donald Brown and Danny Woodhead in the backfield so they’re well equipped to deal with the injury. Still, the loss is a tough blow for the Chargers who came away with a rather shocking victory over the Seattle Seahawks.
Expected to be a run-heavy offense this season, it’s very possible the San Diego Chargers may open the offense up Philip Rivers until Mathews returns from his injury.
