It might feel like the Miami Marlins are stating the ridiculously obvious when they say that outfielder Giancarlo Stanton will not be able to play again this season after he took a fastball to the face last week.

More from Miami Marlins

Crazy though it seems, both Stanton and the Marlins had still left the door open that Stanton could return and play again this season, that despite the fact that there are less than 20 games left before the postseason.

After further tests and evaluation and presumably a big dose of common sense, it sounds like the slugging outfielder will officially be shut down for the season this week. Manager Mike Redmond said as much, according to Joe Frisaro of MLB.com:

"Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton underwent a series of checkups in Miami on Tuesday, and indications are that the two-time All-Star will not be medically cleared to return before the season ends on Sept. 28 at Washington.“[Stanton] was being checked out later this afternoon,” Redmond said. “We’ll have an official statement [Wednesday], but it’s probably not looking good for him.”"

That official statement will likely say exactly what it should say: that the Marlins are officially shutting Stanton down, closing the door on the possibility that he could be reactivated, and putting an end to an outstanding season ended prematurely by an ugly injury.
