Miami Marlins preparing in case Giancarlo Stanton returns in 2014
By Ed Carroll
Giancarlo Stanton might not play again in 2014, but if doctors clear the Miami Marlins outfielder to have an at bat or two before the season ends, the Marlins are prepared to protect their prized young player with special batting helmets. The Marlins haven’t received word yet from the team’s medical staff on whether it should expect to have Stanton back, and don’t expect doctors to clear Stanton to play the field or start, but Miami has ordered three protective batting helmets for Stanton to try out if he gets to play again this season.

Stanton was injured when he took a Mike Fiers pitch to the face last week. The pitch from Fiers was unintentional, and Fiers was shaken after hitting Stanton with a fastball that got away, and required some surgery. It appears the Marlins would like for Stanton, if he is cleared, to get an at bat or two before the winter to make sure Stanton is still comfortable in the batter’s box after his scary experience. Stanton is scheduled to have his stitches removed today.
The Marlins season ends September 28, and it’s unlikely Stanton is cleared to start, so when the Marlins say they hope they can get Stanton an at bat or two, it’s likely just that — an at bat or two. Marlins general manager Dan Jennings was hopeful of a 2014 Stanton return “to create a memorable moment for everyone.”
