The Oakland Athletics announced on Thursday that they have signed a four year Player Development Contract with the Nashville Sounds, making the Sounds their new AAA affiliate.

More from Milwaukee Brewers

This will still keep the A’s in the Pacific Coast League.

This is Nashville’s seventh different team that they have housed a AAA affiliate for since their inception in 1978. They had been the AAA affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers for the last ten years.

As expected, Brewers General Manager Doug Melvin is more than a little torqued about this. Not only is Nashville scheduled to open a new ballpark next year that will likely increase revenue, many of the Brewers’ brass, including Melvin, participated in the ground breaking ceremony on First Tennessee Park. Melvin also cited that the Sounds didn’t give him ample warning of the severance of ties. That leaves the Brewers scrambling to find an affiliate for next year.

Melvin thinks that with further advance notice that he could have had better opportunities than Fresno or Colorado Springs. Albuquerque and Sacramento were both open less than a month ago.

The A’s have abandoned the Sacramento River Cats, but this should come as little surprise. Susan Slusser has been speaking of an impeding breakup since May. Sacramento will be the AAA affiliate for the San Francisco Giants starting next season. That leaves Fresno currently unoccupied with the Giants leaving.

So, if you’re keeping score, that leaves the Brewers and Dodgers looking for new AAA residences, and Colorado Springs and Fresno are the only currently unoccupied slots.
