Ravens’ Steve Smith gets revenge against Panthers, steals teammate’s incompletion to prove skills to everyone

He had the date circled and wanted to steal the spotlight because Sept. 28 in Baltimore is actually Steve Smith Sr. day.

Smith Sr. (as is stitched on the back of his jersey to emphasize his age) channeled his inner Bugs Bunny against the Panthers on Sunday, taking what would’ve been a teammate’s incompletion 61 yards for a touchdown.

“I wasn’t even trying to get him the ball,” Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco said after the game.  “I guess he wanted to beat everyone on his own today… maybe us included perhaps in some way?  I’m not sure.”

Rumor has it that Smith still keeps a Panthers decal and a picture of his former quarterback Cam Newton in his locker because “the heartbreak struggle is real,” according to an anonymous source within the Ravens.

Steve Smith said he’ll get his revenge when the Panthers cut him in the offseason, and that’s exactly what he did in the Ravens 38-10 win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

“I didn’t have anything good, bad or indifferent to say.  I just played.  At the end of the day, honestly, they didn’t deserve anything I had to say that would be derogatory – and I didn’t need to,” Smith said after the game.  “They didn’t even deserve me to spin the ball on them.  I just caught it and put it down and went about my business.”

Smith finished the day with seven catches for 139 yards and two touchdowns against his former team.

“He did some really good things,” Panthers coach Ron Rivera said.

“And that’s who Steve is.”

Smith’s second touchdown grab of the day came on a diving reception on the left side of the end zone 21-yards out to put Baltimore up 21-7 with 1:53 left in the first half.  Flacco dropped the snap at first before tossing it to Smith for the score.

Smith did warn everyone to “put [our] goggles on” when he signed with Baltimore after 13 years in Carolina, circling this game on the calendar.

“’Cause there’s going to be blood and guts everywhere.”

For the record, we’re still waiting for the blood and guts part, but we did get to see a vintage Steve Smith performance against his old team.
