The A’s jumped on the Royals early thanks to a Brandon Moss home run in the first inning. That looked like it would be a tough deficit to overcome with Jon Lester on the mound for Oakland.
The Royals rallied, however, finding success by being aggressive against Lester, sometimes on his cutter. That’s not often a recipe for success, but it was in this one thanks to a couple nice swings from Lorenzo Cain and Eric Hosmer.
In Cain’s case, he roped a double into the left field corner. In Hosmer’s case, it was more of a bloop single that fell in the right spot, but the first baseman still did well to hang in there and put a swing on the pitch. This single put the Royals up by a 3-2 score with lots of game left. That lead would eventually fade on Moss’s second home run in the sixth inning.
