Leon v Monterrey result: Rayados overpower Leon
Leon and Monterrey squared off in Week 11 of the Apertura 2014 on Tuesday night, as Liga MX kicked off their “jornada doble” which will bring fans six consecutive days of soccer prior to the October FIFA break.
La Fiera entered Jornada 11 sitting in the No. 16 spot of the league table, while Rayados sitting just behind Club America in the No. 2 spot. It was crucial for Leon to come away with points at home if they wanted to begin thier late season charge towards the top eight to qualify for Liguilla.
When the final whistle blew, it was Monterrey was too much for the defending champions and Rayados came away with a big 3-1 win on the road..
Monterrey got the scoring underway in the 16th minute when Liga MX leading goal scorer Dorlan Pabon found the back of the net for Rayados, and they were able to hang on to the lead through the half.
Leon felt the pressure in the second half and was digging deep for the equalizer.
That moment came shortly after the start of the half, with Juan Ignacio González heading a pass off of a corner in the 48th minute. The ball found Mauro Boselli’s head and went right by Jonathan Orozco to even the score.
Unfortunately for La Fiera, the joy was short lived as Monterrey answered right back on a corner of their own.
Dorlan Pabón sent a cross in off of the corner, and Jesús Zavala hammered the ball home to the near post with his head.
After Monterrey went back ahead, it was all downhill for Leon.
Pabon scored his second goal of the match in the 85th minute to give Rayados an insurmountable 3-1 lead.
The two sides will now sit back and watch the remainder of Jornada 11, before suiting back up in a few days for Jornada 12.
