The Toronto Blue Jays showed their support for GM Alex Anthopoulos and manager John Gibbons

The Toronto Blue Jays own Major League Baseball’s longest playoff drought at 21 years (thanks to the Kansas City Royals ending their 29-year streak this season) and faded badly in 2014, finishing third in the American League East division with a record of 83-79. The Toronto Blue Jays still expect both general manager Alex Anthopoulos and manager John Gibbons to return in 2015, said CEO Paul Beeston in a radio interview.

Anthopoulos has been the GM of the Toronto Blue Jays for the past five seasons and has been with the organization for 10 years. He assembled most of the Toronto Blue Jays’ current roster and was also responsible for the overhaul prior to the 2013 season. The 2013 Toronto Blue Jays went into the season with big expectations after a few splashy offseason moves, but the 2013 Jays were even worse, finishing last in the AL East with a record of 74-88. The 2014 version of the team was greatly improved and in first place on July 3, but a 9-17 record in August killed any realistic chances of the Toronto Blue Jays contending this season.

2014 was the second season of Gibbons’s second tenure with the Toronto Blue Jays. Gibbons first took over as the Toronto Blue Jays’ manager in 2004 when he managed the team for the final 50 games. He was the full-time manager for the 2005, 2006 and 2007 season, with Gibbons being fired in late June of 2008 in the middle of another last-place season. Gibbons was hired again before the 2013 season, replacing manager John Farrell, who was traded to the Boston Red Sox for utility infielder Mike Aviles. Gibbons has never led a team to more than 87 wins, which he did with the 2006 Toronto Blue Jays.
