NBA: Redrafting the 2009 NBA Draft
By John Bauman
The key with any good redraft is using what we know now to make better picks for the teams. While it is unlikely that Mills would have developed into the useful bench kog like he did with the Spurs, we have seen the light and know was Mills can be. Also, Mills is a good fit for the Sun’s up tempo style of play. Knowing what we know now, I think the Suns select Mills 41 spots higher than he went in 2009.

With the actual 14th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, the Suns selected Earl Clark, a junior from Louisville. Clark only lasted 60 games with the Suns before finding a home for the 2013-14 NBA season with the Cavs and the Knicks, with stops in Orlando and L.A. coming in between. Clark wasn’t a complete bust, but he doesn’t have the potential that the Sun’s pick in the redraft does — Patty Mills.
Now some of you are probably thinking, “Who is Patty Mills?” or more likely, “Patty Mills? Really?” Mills was the 55th overall pick in the actual 2009 NBA Draft of Portland and played two seasons there, averaging 2.6 points his rookie season. But when he was given the magic serum that all San Antonio Spurs get when they sign a contract with the team, he turned into a useful bench point guard and three point bomber. That new identity really came out in the 2014 NBA playoffs.
