During the past two offseasons the  Houston Rockets have sought to add a ‘third star’ to form a three-headed monster with James Harden and Dwight Howard.

More from Houston Rockets

They’ve attempted to woo everybody from Carmelo Anthony to Chris Bosh yet they haven’t been able to seal the deal despite reportedly being close. Those pursuits ended up costing them in the talent department as the Houston Rockets parted ways with Chandler Parsons, Jeremy Lin and Omar Asik due to salary concerns. That may prove to be a blessing in disguise though if general manager Daryl Morey is able to add the much desired third star thanks to the new NBA salary cap.

"Yes, the new deal absolutely does help the Rockets get themselves into contention for a third superstar, though a lot of that depends on how the new money makes its way into the salary cap. It might be more gradual that we originally thought, but either way there’s going to be more than enough cash to get another big name paid."

While that’s good news for the Houston Rockets, keep in mind they aren’t going to be the only team with extra money to spend. The Miami Heat are already said to be prepared to unleash their cash flow come 2016 and the Los Angeles Lakers could have enough money to offer three maximum level contracts under the new salary cap.

All that said, plenty can happen between now and then so nothing is set in concrete. Still, it’s clear the Houston Rockets are going to have a significant amount of cap space if things stay on the same path and few destinations will be more attractive than teaming up with Dwight Howard and James Harden.
