Florida Panthers cannot seem to find a victory as they fall 5-1 to the New Jersey Devils

The New Jersey Devils have long been characterized by their smothering defense, but it seems the team has finally picked up some scorepower to accompany it.

The metropolitan division team took down the Florida Panthers in a 5-1 victory, putting them at eleven goals in two games. In contrast, the Panthers have scored a mere three goals- not an acceptable number for a team that spent over $5 million dollars annually for a new top-six forward.

The Devils put up impressive numbers throughout the entire game, with a peppering of goals scored both by the team’s offense and the newest defensive contributors. Both newcomer forward Mike Cammalleri and rookie defenseman Eric Gelinas started off the scoring strong for the team, netting three unanswered goals with Martin Havlat in the first period alone.

Both teams showed good puck possession throughout the game and had a solid number of SOG, but it seems that Corey Schneider simply had a better night than either Roberto Luongo or his relief in net, Al Montoya.

The Devils are now undefeated, and sitting in first in the Metropolitan Division. In contrast, the Panthers have yet to net a win, heading into their third game of the season on October 13th with an 0-2 record good for 6th in the Atlantic Division. Neither team made the playoffs this past season, although many consider the Devils to be a sleeper pick to see the post-season this spring.
