With just a few days until NBA teams close up shop on their training camp, roster cuts are being handed down and the Chicago Bulls are one of the first to trim the fat.
Three players had the unfortunate scenario of getting called into the front office and being handed their walking papers including some names you’ve probably heard of before, even if you’re not the biggest NBA fan.
Let go were guards Kim English and Ben Hansbrough in addition to forward/center Solomon Jones.
Hansbrough is of course the younger brother of Tyler Hansbrough who currently plays for the Toronto Raptors and is a former Naismith College Player of the Year award winner in 2007–08. Simply put, the Chicago Bulls simply have too much talent and depth for any of the previously mentioned players to make the roster and they’re better off served becoming free agents in hopes of landing another gig.
All three players signed with the team last month in effort to complete the Chicago Bulls training camp roster though were likely under the impression that making the final cut was almost impossible.
With all three removed from the team the Chicago Bulls currently have 14 players on their roster giving them an open spot if need be. Many NBA teams will only employ 14 players which allows them to keep an open roster spot in case they need to sign a player due to injury.
The Chicago Bulls appear ready for the start of the season while English, Hansbrough and Jones will all look for a new team. It’s unlikely they’re going to find any and may need to wait until deeper into the season or possibly may opt to sign with a foreign team and include an NBA opt-out clause in such a deal.
