The Denver Broncos found themselves in an unenviable position on Thursday, having to deal with the arrest of safety and practice squad member John Boyett. Unfortunately, that is the only normal part of this story because this is one of the most bizarre arrest stories you’ll ever here.
Here is a brief synopsis of Boyett’s night in a timeline form.
- Boyett was drinking at the Sports Book Bar & Grill
- Boyett tried to take food off another patron’s plate
- He was asked to leave
- He threatened to punch a bartender and refused to pay his tab
- Two police officers responded
- Boyett calls a cab
- Drunkenly head-butted and punched the cab driver
- Stoke a shovel from a construction site
- Used said shovel to cover himself in mulch to hide from police
- Told arresting officers to “contact his boss ‘John Elway'”
- Repeatedly slammed his head into a patrol car window while yelling and spitting
And we know all of that thanks to court records, and our friends at the Denver Post.
What is even more shocking about all of this perhaps is that his head looks just fine in his mugshot, not to mention he looks relatively clean considering he tried to bury himself.
This isn’t the first time Boyett has had a bizarre run-in with the cops either, in September of 2013 — while with the Indianapolis Colts — he was arrested on charges of disorderly public intoxication and resisting arrest after yet another altercation with police.
The Broncos cut ties with Boyett on Thursday after learning of the arrest, and to avoid having him break every window in team facilities by head-butting them all. IN the meantime, Boyett has been charged with third-degree assault, theft and harassment.
